Book Pub: Graham Steele and Howard Epstein

Graham Steele and Howard Epstein both entered politics with the hope of making change. They were a part of the same party, and were both among the 31 NDP MLAs to form the first NDP government in Atlantic Canada here in Nova Scotia. That government was a single-term government, the first single term government in Nova Scotia since 1882.

Where Epstein and Steele diverge is on their perspeCtives on why this was the case for the Nova Scotia NDP. Epstein made a strong argument for a better NDP, and a more democratic political party. Steele suggested that the ingrained political culture is stronger than any single party can disrupt. This event was an opportunity for Steele, Epstein and attendees to explore these perspectives, and the implications of each.

  • Is our political culture to blame for the collapse of the NDP?

  • Can a strong, democratic party make meaningful policy change within the current culture?

  • If fixing politics is the goal, where do we start: with the prevailing culture or parties?

Barbara Emodi moderated the discussion. Emodi is a member of the faculty of Public Relations at Mount Saint Vincent University, a CBC "Spinbuster" and a former caucus communications director for the Nova Scotia NDP.
