Make Democracy Better

Make Democracy Better is a project started by the Springtide Collective in late 2014 with three objectives: To start a conversation about improving democracy in Nova Scotia, to identify people and groups who want to Make Democracy Better, and to build an action plan for a better democracy, using the priorities identified by participants and inspired by the best information and research available.

Make Democracy Better is a project started by the Springtide Collective in late 2014 with three objectives:

  1. To start a conversation about improving democracy in Nova Scotia

  2. To identify people and groups who want to Make Democracy Better.

  3. To build an action plan for a better democracy, using the priorities identified by participants and inspired by the best information and research available.

In 2015 we completed a round of community engagement and online engagements with Nova Scotians to learn which areas participants were most eager to explore deeper to make democracy better. Now we’re following through by making those issues priorities for research and community engagement at Springtide. View the results.

In 2016 the focus issue for the Make Democracy Better project has been voting system reform. In April 2016, we published the discussion paper 'Better Choices: voting system alternatives for Nova Scotia', and will be asking Nova Scotians to help us find the best voting system for Nova Scotia at events throughout the spring of 2016.

Make Democracy Better was made possible with the support of Engage Nova Scotia, the Democracy 250 Youth Engagement Legacy Trust and numerous local partners and citizens.
